Composed of three compact volumes, this dwelling strives to achieve a degree of privacy, both internally and externally within a tight suburban site. Each volume offering the clients a different degree of enclosure according to the functions contained within. The three volumes are linked with 1.5 metre wide glazing helping each have it’s own individual identity. Each block has been slid on it’s north south axis creating interesting internal spaces that zone separate activities whilst maximising solar gain. The interior naturally developed as a series of sub-spaces that ebb and flow into one another, as one space shifts into the next unexpected sight lines develop, creating a spatial richness both internally and externally.
Two of the volumes are clad in Kilkenny Blue limestone and one in Western Red Ceder with butterfly-pitch roofs allowing light to stream into the first floor without reducing privacy or creating overlook issues. The central volume is three storeys and clad in Western Red Ceder with a flat Sedum roof. Our palette of materials was chosen to infuse the timeless textures of timber and Kilkenny Blue limestone with the striking freshness of white render and glass. Whilst harking back to the materials traditionally used in suburban Irish architecture as it is thought that they will aid the integration of this contemporary building within it’s mature suburban context.
